It's time for our new monthly blog series! If you missed it before, once a month we'll be showcasing an amazing small business owner. You'll get to know all about their business, how they started it, what they sell, and a few extra fun facts!
So let's introduce, Amber!
What inspired you to start your company?
My mom burns candles in every room of the house everyday. I thought, "I can totally make candles" and one day I did. So naturally, after my one candle I made I decided to start a candle business. Ever since I can remember I have been starting clubs and leading organizations. The inspiration comes from within. There is something in me that constantly drives me to start new ventures. Starting Opal and Wonder was what my soul wanted to create at the time. So yeah, the inspiration was a soul calling to create and my mom.
What is your favorite part of being an entrepreneur?
The creative freedom and ability to build something completely around my values.
What are some of the biggest challenges you've faced and how have you overcome them?
Tough question, Kristen! There are so many challenges. Taking the leap from my day job to work for myself full time, hiring my first employee, sourcing materials responsibly . . .the list goes on! However the one I still struggle with today is honoring boundaries to maintain a healthy work/life balance. Being an entrepreneur means long hours. You don't clock out and you often work through lunch. The work never ends and if you like what you do, you really don't mind it. I never considered being a "workaholic" as a bad thing until recently when I "woke up" to see all of my relationships falling apart because I was spending too much time on my business. I found myself confused and conflicted. "Achieve! Achieve! Must make progress!" was on repeat in my mind. I didn't know how to turn it off or when I was supposed to. All I knew in that moment when everything around me was crumbling was that I had to. I had to make time for myself, my family and my friends. I began by writing down boundaries. I blocked off time in my planner for 2 hours of self-care M-F. I promised not to check my e-mails in bed ever again. I committed to being done with work by 7pm at the latest no matter what. These boundaries are now my non-negotiables. My morning ritual gets me into my body and has drastically reduced my stress and anxiety. My "no-emails in bed" and "done before 7" rules have created more quality time with my friends, family and loving boyfriend, while also grounding me in the present. I am becoming happier and healthier and as a result so are my relationships and my business!
What are some of your favorite products in your store right now?
My Lavender Essential Oil Candle is my go-to currently, but Earth Child will always be my favorite! Smells like dirt and moss and everything great about the forest.
What is the one thing you'd love to tell people who are new to your brand?
I would love for people to know about how much thought and intention are put into each candle. There is a personal story or connection behind each of them. Opal and Wonder is more than candles. It is my way to share the light that not only brightens up your space, but also the light that sparks your inner flame.
THE FUN STUFF
I could eat pizza everyday of my life. So yeah, it's probably my favorite. Actually, I just ordered a pizza. HAHA
Favorite TV Show:
I'm a life-long fan of Survivor. But "GIRLS" and "The Wild Thornberrys" are runner-ups.
Water with cucumber or mint
"Look at the moon" or "Did you dream last night?" Not sure if those count as sayings. . . but I say them a lot.
Alice in Wonderland
